TNO is one of the major contract research organisations in Europe. TNO functions as an intermediary between basic research organisations and industry. By translating scientific knowledge into practical applications, TNO contributes to the innovation capacity of businesses and government. TNO is involved in many international projects (about 30% of the market turnover), including EU-funded collaborations.

This is our mission and it is what drives us, the over 2,600 professionals at TNO, in our work every day. We work in collaboration with partners and focus on five domains.

ABOUT TNO

TNO is an independent research organisation. We believe in the joint creation of economic and social value. We focus on transitions or changes in five social themes:

• Industry, for a strong, internationally competitive business community.
• Healthy Living, for a fit, healthy and productive population.
• Defence & Security, for decisive action in an uncertain world.
• Energy, for faster progress towards a low-carbon energy system.
• Urbanisation, to innovate for dynamic urban regions.

In the theme of Urbanisation applied research is carried out for the automotive industry and related branches. The expertise covers relevant technological aspects as well as the influence of human behaviour. The focus is on innovation in the areas of reliable transport systems and safe and clean mobility.

TNO is active in several relevant working groups for the project, such as UITP SORT Working Group and UNECE GTR4 HDH HILS activities – namely the GRPE Informal Working Group on Heavy Duty Hybrids. TNO is active in ERTRAC, EGVIA, and EARPA (where it currently chairs).

OUR STRATEGY

Every four years, in close collaboration with our stakeholders, we draw up a strategic plan that describes how we will pursue our mission. This plan is our proposal to society. Our strategy is a reflection of the trends we observe in society and technology. In close coordination with our stakeholders we have defined five domains on which we will focus. These are in line with the challenges and ambitions of the Top Sector policy and social themes in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe.
